Bells in the Rain 1946
(Elinor Wylie)
The sound of bells permeates the piano accompaniment throughout the entire song. The sound of tinkling wind chimes is created by a tiny motive of ascending sixteenth notes in the high register combined with fourths and fifths. Raindrops “ring like bells of glass.” The vocal line is sustained and peacefully lyric against this unvaried accompaniment. This wonderful song is one of Duke’s most effective atmospheric settings.
